Navy's Hayes set for Western Amateur Championship

Two-time All-Patriot League golfer and rising Navy senior Ben Hayes is one of 156 players who will vie for the title at the 108th Western Amateur Championship, one of the oldest amateur competitions in golf, today through Saturday at Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. The two top amateurs at this year's U.S. and British Opens will be among a strong international field at the tournament.

College football: Fordham senior Jason Caldwell (St. Paul's) was named a 2010 first-team Preseason All-American by both The Sports Network and Phil Steele's College Football Preview. Caldwell also was named first-team Preseason All-Patriot League by Phil Steele's College Football Preview.

Women's college basketball: Former Lynchburg standout Abby Pyzik (Mercy) will return to the college as the women's basketball coach. Pyzik had worked as an assistant coach at Washington & Lee the past two seasons.

Youth baseball: The HCYP 12-U Metro Raiders from Ellicott City won the Around The Horn Plus title for Week 8 at Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 26. The Metro Raiders, coached by Dave Ratajski, were one of 103 teams in the timed competition, which displays throwing accuracy and distance between the infield and outfield. Eight or nine players from each team compete in the contest.
