Whispers: Can Yankees manager Girardi resurrect Wood?

Yankees manager caught reliever with Cubs

August 01, 2010|By Phil Rogers

Manager Joe Girardi must have influenced the Yankees' addition of Kerry Wood (above). Wood has been a mess with the Indians. … Player most surprisingly not traded: Brett Myers. Astros owner Drayton McLane never will throw in the towel. He sees Myers becoming a replacement for Roy Oswalt, but he's a risky guy to give an extension, and the Astros aren't going anywhere for at least a couple of years. … The best deal of the weekend was the Twins sending catcher Wilson Ramos to the Nationals for closer Matt Capps. It could help both teams. … The Giants were pleased with adding lefty Javier Lopez, but they needed a bat. Every time they went after a big name, the other team asked for pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who was unavailable. … Not sure why the Phillies didn't value pitcher J.A. Happ higher. He could thrive with the Astros. … We're about to find out if Brett Wallace is worth the fuss. The much-traveled minor-leaguer should take over for Lance Berkman as the Astros' first baseman. … When are the A's going to give Chris Carter a shot? They have no power but stubbornly stick with Daric Barton at first base rather than Carter, a former White Sox prospect with 30-homer power.
