Two men arrested in connection with a scheme under which fake cash was being printed in a Pikesville motel room have been charged under federal statutes, according to Baltimore County police. A third man was killed by detectives early Thursday during a gunfight in the motel's parking lot.

Darryl S. Bacon, 31, and Dayon D. Barnes, 26, are accused of counterfeiting, reproducing currency and possession of counterfeit currency. Bacon, who lives on the 10700 block of Chapeldale Road in Randallstown, was released on $175,000 bail. Barnes, of the 1000 block of Hollins St. in West Baltimore, was freed on $150,000 bail.

Police said Bacon, Barnes and the man who was killed, Erik D. Stokes, 34, were suspected of being part of an East Coast counterfeiting ring and were under surveillance at the Ramada Baltimore West on Reisterstown Road.

Just after midnight on Thursday, police said, the men were leaving their second-floor room with some of the equipment they allegedly had been using to print money when two detectives made their presence known. Stokes pulled out a gun and was fatally shot when the detectives opened fire, they said later.

Police are asking business owners to closely check the currency they are receiving from customers.
