County Executive John R. Leopold is recovering from his second back surgery in five months, his spokesman said Monday.
Leopold underwent revision lumbar spinal fusion surgery Friday afternoon at Anne Arundel Medical Center and was released from the hospital Sunday, said spokesman Dave Abrams. He had a similar procedure in February.
"After the initial surgery, unfortunately he still was experiencing some pain," said Abrams. "He decided to have this procedure done so he can mount a full and vigorous campaign in the fall."
Abrams said Leopold's doctor has recommended a two-week recovery time.
"We are still running things by him; he's involved in the day-to-day work," said Abrams. "He's just not in the office."
Under the county charter, Chief Administrative Officer Dennis M. Callahan takes over Leopold's duties in his absence.
The spokesman said that Leopold, who is running for re-election, was waving signs on Route 2 this past Friday morning, hours before the surgery. Leopold, a Republican, faces Democratic candidate Joanna Conti, a business executive, in the fall.
Leopold, 67, was elected Anne Arundel county executive in 2006 after serving in the House of Delegates for 20 years.
