A 53-year old Columbia man was sentenced to six months in jail for hitting an 82-year-old woman in a crosswalk last November and then leaving the scene of the accident.
James Walden Beaman Jr., of the 6300 block of Rainbow Span, which is near the accident scene, was sentenced Wednesday by Judge Lenore Gelfman to 18 months in jail, with all but six months suspended. He also must complete 500 hours of community service and two years supervised probation on convictions for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk and leaving the scene of the accident, said Wayne Kirwan, a spokesman for State's Attorney Dario Broccolino.
The woman, Ayten Icgoren, died the next day at Shock Trauma, according to prosecutor Danielle Duclaux.
Icgoren was trying to cross the 7200 block of Cradlerock Way near the Owen Brown Village Center on the wet morning of Nov. 24. Duclaux said two witnesses told authorities that Beaman's white Toyota pickup truck wobbled and seemed to skid as he tried to stop. Icgoren walked faster, but was hit anyway. The truck drove a short way to the village center, though Beaman returned after police and paramedics arrived, according to Duclaux. Beaman pleaded not guilty May 21, but agreed to the facts presented in court by the prosecution, Duclaux said.
Icgoren was well-known in the community for a 2008 conviction for neglecting and abusing dozens of cats that lived in her townhouse with her and her daughter, Nese Icgoren. Neighbors complained the stench was so bad they could not open their windows. Ayten Icgoren was sentenced to six months in jail in 2009 for having a cat, which a judge said violated the terms of her probation in the animal neglect and cruelty case. Nese Icgoren was sentenced to 74 days in jail last year on animal cruelty charges. The number of days matched the number of cats that died.
