A man and a woman who were reported missing in a three-alarm house fire Sunday in Anne Arundel County were later found dead inside the dwelling, firefighters said at the scene.

Battalion Chief Steve Thompson of the county fire department said that a relative of the two people, a 70-year-old woman who lived in the house, managed to escape the fire and was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center "for a checkup." Thompson said she appeared to be uninjured but was being examined as a precaution.

"She didn't want to go," he said. "She was more upset about the two people still inside the house."

The fire was reported at 11:18 a.m. in a single-family dwelling on the 400 block of Highland Dr. in Edgewater. It was under control by 2 p.m., Thompson said.

The two residents, whose names were not immediately released, were unaccounted for as the alarms were raised to three and firefighters continued to struggle with the blaze, which Thompson called "a very active fire." He added Sunday afternoon that investigators were still trying to determine a cause.
