Ellicott City's Capra takes Italian Open junior event

Eighth seed Beatrice Capra of Ellicott City won the girls singles final at the clay-court Italian Open on Sunday in Milan, clinching her first International Tennis Federation World Junior Circuit GradeA title. Capra, 17, who trains at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Fla., used aggressive ground strokes and a powerful serve to overcome allergy problems and defeat her roommate and 10th seed Lauren Davis, 6-1, 6-4. "I'm very happy to have won," said Capra, who also triumphed at the Grade 1 Banana Bowl tournament in March.

Stevenson's Kazimer, Dailey are honored by USILA

Stevenson attackman Steve Kazimer and attackman Jimmy Dailey (Winters Mill) were selected to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III All-America first team for the second straight year. The first team also included Salisbury midfielder Sam Bradman. Stevenson attackman Richie Ford (Towson), short-stick specialist Ray Witte (Sts. Peter and Paul) and defenseman Evan Douglass were named to the second team; others on that squad included Salisbury midfielder Mike Von Kamecke, long-pole midfielder Connor Burgasser, defenseman Collin Tokosch (Broadneck) and goalie Johnny Rodriguez (Mount St. Joseph). Stevenson midfielder Kyle Moffitt made the third team.

Women: Stevenson midfielder Lauren Zegowitz was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro/South All-Star team. … McDaniel attacker Brittany Baer (Westminster) was named a third-team All-American by womenslacrosse.com.

Frostburg State's Tapman makes All-Region third team

Frostburg State outfielder Brooke Tapman was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA DivisionIII Atlantic All-Region softball third team. Tapman, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, led the team to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance and a school-record 30 wins.

Bayhawks' Smith is MLL's top defensive player again

Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Alex Smith (Boys' Latin) was named Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. Smith, who played at Delaware, won 34 out of 39 faceoffs in Chesapeake's 25-12 rout of the Toronto Nationals on Saturday. The Bayhawks (2-0) will play at the Pittsburgh Machine at 4 p.m. Sunday, then will host the Boston Cannons on June 4.

Minor league baseball: MASN will televise Stephen Strasburg's next scheduled start on tape delay at approximately midnight Saturday. Strasburg, a Washington Nationals prospect who is 3-0 for Triple-A Syracuse with a 0.39 ERA, will face Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. … Double-A Bowie Baysox outfielder Danny Figueroa was activated from the disabled list and transferred to Triple-A Norfolk. Figueroa is batting .190 in 17games for the Baysox.
