Warbirds Over the Beach Airshow. Virigina Beach Airport, 1341 Princess Anne Road. 757-721-7767 or Gates open at 8:30 a.m. and flying begins at 1 p.m. May 22 and 23. Spectators can watch World War I and War War II airplanes fly overhead, as well as catch period re-enactors and live music at the airplane show. Bring your own beach chairs. Free.


Hardee's Latin Fest. 24th Street Park. 757-491-7866 or Throughout the days on June 11-12. Latin food, music and dancing. Salsa dance lessons June 12. Free.

Sandstock — A Blast From the Past. 17th Street Park, 24th Street Park and 31st Street Park. 757-491-7866 or Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. June 25-27. Beach-inspired version of Woodstock features concerts by tribute artists singing the music of the '60s, '70s and '80s. Decorated parks, light shows, "hippie" vans on display, games, activities for kids, more. Free.


Stars & Stripes Explosion. 17th Street Park, 24th Street Park, 31st Street Park and on the beach at 20th Street. 800-822-3224 or Holiday concerts by numerous bands throughout the afternoon and evening July 4. A performance by Virginia Beach's symphony orchestra, Symphonicity, and the Virginia Beach Chorale at 8 p.m. on the beach at 20th Street. Fireworks show wraps up the festivities at 9:30 p.m. Free.

Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge. On the beach at 30th Street. 757-491-7866 or July 10. Registration begins at 10 a.m.; events run until 2 p.m. Some 300 hermit crabs will race (or take their own sweet time) to the finish line at this challenge, which is open to hermit crab owners of all ages. All participants receive a medal. Event also features a Crustacean Beauty Pageant. All events are free for participants and free for spectators.


FunkFest. 24th Street Park. 757-491-7866 or Throughout the day Aug. 27-28. Hear live funk music, bust a funky move in dance contests, enjoy food and browse the funkadelic merchandise. Performers this year are set to include Sugarfoot's Ohio Players, The Dazz Band and Con Funk Shon. Free.

East Coast Surfing Championships. Oceanfront. 800-861-7873 or Events run 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 27, 7 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Aug. 28-29, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Aug. 30. Some 100 top surfers as well as 300 amateur surfers will compete for prizes. There are also skimboarding competitions, volleyball matches, a 5K run, a swimsuit contest, skateboarding, live music and food vendors. There's a cost for competition participants, but all activities are free for the public.


Naval Air Station Oceana Air Show. Oceana Naval Air Station. 757-385-8000 or Gates open at 5 p.m. Sept. 17 and at 8 a.m. Sept. 18-19. Show hours are 5 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Sept. 17, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 18-19. The air show features precision flying from the Navy's Blue Angels, demonstrations from the British Army Red Devils, aerobatics from civilian performers and lots more flying from many other military and nonmilitary aircraft. Free admission.
