No. 2 Falcons break out with four-run fourth inning

For the first three innings, No. 4 Atholton held No. 2 Severna Park and its bats in check. But things changed in the fourth.

"The heart of our order has been big for us all year," Falcons coach Jim McCandless said. "That inning was no different."

Severna Park's offense, ignited by Alex Ramsay's two-run triple, broke through in the fourth and couldn't be stopped thereafter as the Falcons defeated the Raiders, 8-2, capturing the first annual District V championship Thursday at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover.

The game was supposed to feature the champions from Anne Arundel and Howard counties, but after a matchup with Howard County champ Hammond fell through, the Raiders were next in line.

"We didn't find out until about 10 this morning that we were going to play," Raiders coach Kevin Kelly said. "While that's tough on the kids, hats off to the Falcons. We lost to a great, great team today."

After singles by Trevor Freeman

(2-for-4) and Brent Jones (2-for-3 with a double and an RBI), Ramsay, who grounded out in his first plate appearance against Raiders pitcher Paul Beers, pounded the ball into deep right-center field to score both runners.

"I was waiting on the changeup," the Maryland-bound Ramsay said, "and I got ahold of it."

Said winning pitcher Clarke Lindsay, "After that hit, we knew we could get to" Beers.

In all, the defending Class 4A state champion Falcons (19-2) tagged the Raiders (17-4) for four runs in the fourth to break the game open.

Lindsay, who pitched a complete game and scattered seven hits, said Severna Park will look to build on this win heading into the playoffs.

"We're the defending champions," Lindsay said. "We know we have that target on our back. We just have to stay focused."

Severna Park has the top seed in Class4A East and will play the winner of Great Mills and Meade on Monday.

Atholton is the third seed in

Class 3A East and hosts Wilde Lake on Monday.
