Police are searching for a man who groped two women during two separate incidences as they jogged in Columbia.

In both incidences, female joggers on Vollmerhausen Drive said a man approached them from behind and began to follow them, Howard County police said. When the man bent down to tie his shoe, he touched them inappropriately as they jogged past, police said.

In the first incident, which occurred at about 6 p.m. March 29, a 28-year-old Columbia woman told police she was jogging on Vollmerhausen Drive near Dragon Claw when she was approached. She told police the man continued to follow her until she saw a resident on Polished Stone and called for help. The man fled eastbound on Vollmerhausen, police said.

The second attack occurred on 5:45 p.m. on May 10 when a 22-year-old Columbia woman told police that she was also running on Vollmerhausen Drive near Early Spring Way when a man of a similar description bent down to tie his shoe, groped her and began her follow her.

Officers searched the area after both incidents but did not find the man.

Police have increased patrols in the area and are encouraging joggers to familiarize themselves with the area, to stay on sidewalks and paths, carry a cell phone and go with a friend. If joggers are alone, police suggested they tell family or friends where they are going and not wear headphones.

Anyone with information is urged to call 410-313-7867.
