Annapolis man wanted in shooting at American Legion hall

18-year-old charged with attempted 1st degree murder

Annapolis police are searching for a man charged in a shooting that occurred inside an American Legion hall earlier this month.

Deon Akeem Matthews, 18, of the 700 block of Newtowne Drive in Annapolis is wanted in attempted first degree murder and other charges related to a shooting at 1:27 a.m. May 1 at 700 block of Newtowne Drive.

Officers were called to break up a fight involving a large group of people inside an American Legion hall, police said, when they heard shots fired.

The man who was shot in the chest and taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, survived, police said.

Witness reports varied, but some said they heard as many as five shots fired.

According to electronic court records, Matthews has a trial date scheduled for May 17 for unrelated drug charges.
