Free phones for passengers

on AirTran, El Al Israel

What's the deal? For some reason, phones are a popular freebie popping up for passengers traveling this spring. One deal from AirTran Airways and T-Mobile allows free in-flight use of a HTC HD2 phone. Passengers can check out the phone, which is set up with GoGo In-Flight and offers video features and Paramount Studios movie trailers, at the airport terminal before their flight and return it upon landing.

El-Al Israel Airlines is offering 1,000 free cell phones to use on your vacation in Israel – and future trips to the country.

What are the savings? For the AirTran offer, since T-Mobile is also providing free Wi-Fi access for all AirTran flights through May 23, passengers save the normally $12.95 fee whether you try out their phone or use your own.

For El-Al's "Your Phone Away From Home" offer, the phones include 60 complimentary minutes of outgoing calls from within Israel and there is no charge for incoming calls from anywhere in the world. Additional airtime for outgoing calls are available. A free phone charger is also included.

What's the catch? El-Al requires purchase of a round-trip ticket in a specific class of service for travel by June 30. However, there are no rental fees or hidden costs for the phone and no obligation to purchase additional minutes. When you purchase your ticket, a voucher is included with a code to select the phone at an online website, elalphone.com. You will need to register the phone in advance of your trip. The phone will not work outside Israel.
