Volunteers needed

Special Olympics needs volunteers for its annual softball invitational tournament being held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Kiwanis Wallas Park in Ellicott City. Red Branch theatre Company will hold auditions for David Auburn's "Proof" from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at 9130 Red Branch Road, Columbia. Callbacks from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. May 17-18. Prepare one contemporary monologue (dramatic or comic) between 30 seconds to one minute in length. All roles are available. E-mail to schedule a five-minute appointment.

Asian film festival

Films that revolve around various Asian cultures will be screened from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 18 and 24 at Howard County Library's Miller branch, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City. Information: 410-313-1950.

Golf tournament

The Fulton Elementary School and Lime Kiln Middle School Parent Teacher Associations' Golf Tournament will be held May 21 at Waverly Woods Golf Course, 2100 Warwick Way, Marriottsville. Cost for the shotgun start, best-ball tournament is $110 for individuals and $420 for foursomes. Players receive 18 holes of golf with a cart, complimentary beverages, a goodie bag and awards. 'From A Global Window: The Caribbean'

Exhibit of photographs and handmade paper by Denee Barr will be on display through May 28 at the Columbia Foundation, 10227 Wincopin Circle, Suite G15. A reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 14. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Information: 410-730-7840 or

Grant awarded

The Nationwide Insurance Foundation has awarded the Salvation Army Howard County Family Service Center a $10,000 grant. The service center provides crisis intervention services for residents facing eviction or utility turn-off, in need of food, clothing and medications. Other services include seasonal assistance for Thanksgiving, Christmas, summer camp and life skills classes. The Nationwide Foundation is an independent corporation funded by contributions from Nationwide companies.

'Columbia Home Tour'

Volunteers are needed to act as hosts at the various homes along the Columbia Home Tour, which will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6. Those interested should call Carol Hobelmann at 410-730-3987.

Seeking volunteers

Howard County Recreation and Parks is accepting applications from those older than 21 who are interested in volunteering at the 18th annual Wine in the Woods Festival being held May 15 and 16 at Symphony Woods in Columbia. Information: 410-313-4624 or

International Day vendors

The Columbia Association is seeking vendors and artisans for its annual Columbia International Day on July 24 at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront. This free event features live music and entertainment representing a variety of cultures, with food, crafts, children's activities and more. Applications are being accepted from those who wish to display or sell items with an international theme. There is a discounted rate for those who apply before June 2.

Teen vocalists and bands

The Columbia Association Teen Advisory Committee is seeking individual performers or groups to play at "Teen Tuesdays" at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront on Tuesdays from June 22 through July 27. Teen Tuesdays is part of the annual Lakefront Festival that features outdoor concerts and movies during the summer.

Teachers needed

The Howard County Arts Council is looking for teachers to fill positions in its visual and performing arts summer camps. Among the subjects offered in the camps are painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, dance, musical theater, poetry and creative writing. Camps are open to students in grades K-7.

Children's services

The CARE Center for Child and Adolescent Resources provides free information to Howard County parents to find services and programs in the community for children and teens. Staff will help families identify their needs and give information to find solutions to their problems. Resource and referral information can cover areas such as community services, recreation and sports, financial assistance, support groups, drug or alcohol abuse, youth development, child care programs and others.

Volunteers needed
