Strong arms lift Gladiators

Softball: No. 6 Glenelg 7, No. 14 Reservoir 1

Pitchers Schmidt, Segrist shut down Gators, helping Glenelg improve to 15-2

Strong pitching from Casey Schmidt and Amanda Segrist, along with some clutch hits late in the game, helped the No. 6 Glenelg softball team come away with a 7-1 win over No. 14 Reservoir on Wednesday.

For Schmidt and Segrist, it was business as usual. The one run that the impressive tandem allowed was the first they've surrendered in five games together. It's a pitching formula that has been working for the Gladiators (15-2) all season.

"At the beginning of each game, we both warm up together," said Segrist, who struck out six of the 10 batters she faced. "Casey pitches the first four innings, and I finish the game. That's been pretty consistent, and it's been working really well."

Schmidt allowed only two hits in her four innings of work before handing the ball over to Segrist to close the game. "We come at you with two great pitchers, maybe the two best in the county," Glenelg assistant coach Jim Schmidt said. "Casey has a very good changeup. Once you get used to that, we bring in Amanda, who rears back and throws it right past you.

"It's nice to have two successful pitchers that bring great contrasting styles."

Rachel Brown pitched well for the Gators (12-5) but got into trouble in the sixth inning, when the Gladiators put four runs on the board. Leah Allen was a big part of the offense, with two singles and a triple.

"I wasn't getting into a hole with two strikes on me," Allen said. "I swung at the first pitch that looked good."

Reservoir was able to stay within striking distance of Glenelg for most of the game, but costly errors were a big reason they couldn't keep Glenelg off the bases toward the end of the game. The Gladiators took advantage of wild pitches and overthrows.

"We made some key defensive and mental mistakes that allowed them to get as many runs as they did," Gators coach Julie Frisvold said.
