Parkville had only one good inning offensively against Perry Hall, but that wound up being more than enough for starter Randy Moran on Tuesday.

Moran struck out 11 and scattered eight hits in six innings for No. 12 Parkville, which let the host Knights take advantage of a five-run third to pull out a 5-2 victory over No. 13 Perry Hall in a Baltimore County game.

Perry Hall starter Justin Zeglin (5-1) shut down Parkville (15-3) for much of the game, retiring the side in order in four of his six innings. The right-hander struck out 10 and set down the final 10 batters he faced, allowing just five hits.

But four of those came in the five-run third inning that changed the game. Zach Hodges gave the Knights a 2-0 lead with a two-run single to center, and Ryan Turner followed with an RBI triple. Alex Downey added a two-run double later in the inning to make it 5-0.

"We live and die with the big inning this year," said Parkville coach Joe Mirabile. "But with Randy on the mound, [if] you get three or four runs, you're probably safe."

Moran (6-1) cleverly mixed his fastball, curve and slider throughout the game. He gave up an RBI double to John Domonkos in the fifth plus Griff Shirley's RBI triple in the sixth, but not much else.

The right-hander struck out eight in the first three innings and said the five-run inning let him relax a little.

"I want to throw strikes in the beginning and get ahead in the count and take command," Moran said. "My team's got my back with the [big] hits."

Parkville's Nick Morton closed it in the seventh. Perry Hall (12-5) made it interesting for a few moments when Jake Gannon came up as the tying run with two on and two outs. But Gannon bounced back to Morton to end the game.

"Give them credit; they took advantage … when they had the chances," Perry Hall coach Russ Butler said. "Sometimes you only get one inning."
