How it happened: The Orioles fell behind 3-0 quickly as the Yankees scored single runs in each of the first three innings on solo homers by Nick Johnson and Nick Swisher and an RBI single by Alex Rodriguez, respectively.

Nolan Reimold drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fourth to make the score 3-1, but things came apart for the Orioles in the bottom of the inning. Orioles starter David Hernandez walked Brett Gardner to lead off the inning, and Francisco Cervelli, attempting to bunt him over, reached safely when Miguel Tejada fielded the ball but made no throw to second because Ty Wigginton hadn't gotten over to cover the base yet. Then, with runners on second and third and one out, Derek Jeter hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Gardner. Hernandez then issued a walk to Johnson, which ended the pitcher's outing. Mark Hendrickson relieved him, and two pitches later, Mark Teixeira hit a fly ball to center field that Lou Montanez, normally a corner outfielder, lost in the sun. The two-run double gave the Yankees a 6-1 advantage.

The Orioles made some noise late, Ty Wigginton hitting a two-run homer in the eighth and, after New York added an insurance run on Johnson's RBI infield single, Matt Wieters and Nolan Reimold hitting back-to-back solo shots in the ninth. Rhyne Hughes and Julio Lugo sandwiched walks around Montanez's flyout, bringing Wigginton, representing the go-ahead run, to the plate with two outs. He worked the count to 2-2, but the second baseman, surprisingly the Orioles' biggest power threat this season, couldn't come through, flying out to end the game and complete a three-game sweep for the Yankees.

He said it: "It's not like we were running out there and not trying. We just made some bad plays. That's the way things are going right now. We need to figure it out and figure it out soon." -- Nick Markakis, Orioles right fielder, who was 1-for-4 with a run

You said it: "Wow, this team is unbelievable! No offense, no defense, and no guts! montanez, scott, jones, and a few more need to be shipped to Norfolk, and a couple should try hitting at AA" -- Phil, commenting on Orioles Insider
