Wine Find: La Petite Frog Picpoul de Pinet

May 05, 2010

From: Coteaux du Languedoc, France
Price: $25/3-liter box
Serve with: Grilled seafood, fried chicken, by itself

The bag-in-box format is gaining increasing acceptance as an economical and flavorful way to sell and serve fine wines — a trend that is validated when Kysela Pere & Fils, one of this country's premier wine importers, offers its versions of the wines. This dry white wine from the underrated Picpoul variety is a clean, crisp, racy, fruity young wine with hints of minerals and herbs. It certainly ranks among the best whites available in a box. It's more expensive than some competitors, but the quality is superior. At the equivalent of $6.25 a bottle, it's a great value and an excellent choice for picnics and parties.
