Jeffrey Brauner of Baltimore was perplexed by last Sunday's "strange mix of weather… fog and thunder at the same time. What was going on?" Steve Zubrick, at the NWS, says it was a clash of warm (79 degrees, 4 p.m. at Dulles), unstable air from the southwest against cool (57 at BWI), maritime air moving in from the north and east. Thunderstorms popped up as the warm air lifted over the cold. Fog formed at the surface as east winds pushed the marine air into the frontal zone.
