Art show

Works by members of the Visual Artists Alliance of Maryland will be on display at Barnes and Noble, Long Gate Shopping Center, 4300 Montgomery Road, through May 30. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Information: 410-203-9001.

Bike drive

Used bicycles can be donated to help disadvantaged persons from developing nations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church's parking lot, 3604 Chatham Road. Donation of $10 to cover shipping charges is suggested. Information: 410-465-2977.

Author appearance

Ned Tillman, author of "The Chesapeake Watershed: A Sense of Place and a Call to Action," appears at 7 p.m. May 19 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 9120 Frederick Road. He will lead a discussion on environmental sustainability and talk about his book. Free. Information: 410-461-7793.

Fundraiser for American Cancer Society

Relay For Life holds this event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at Jilly's Bar & Grill, 10030 Baltimore National Pike. Fifteen percent of proceeds go to help fight cancer. Information: 410-781-4316.

Cheer coaches

Spring art classes

Howard County Center for the Arts is holding registration for its visual and performing arts programs running through June 13. Adult courses include beginner watercolor painting, sumi painting and knitting. Youth courses for ages 5-12 include creating comics and cartoons. Civil War exhibit

"Civil War: The Maryland Story," an exhibit highlighting the presidential election of 1860, continues through June 27 at the B&O Railroad Museum, Ellicott City Station, 2711 Maryland Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays-Sundays. English conversation The Miller branch of the Howard County Library, 9421Frederick Road, Ellicott City, offers "Let's Get Together: English Conversation Club." It's a chance for those for whom English is a second language to practice speaking and understanding English in a group setting. The club meets at 7:45 p.m. Wednesdays.
