Brad Markey threw a one-hitter, struck out nine and drove in three runs to lead top-ranked C. Milton Wright over No. 9 Fallston, 7-0, at Ripken Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

With the victory, the Mustangs clinched the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Chesapeake Division title.

It was Markey's second shutout against the Cougars this season.

"I knew this one was an important game," Markey said. "My go-to pitch was my fastball today. It was keeping them off balance most of the time. They couldn't catch up to it."

Markey's fastball was consistently in the high 80s and hit 90 in the fourth inning. With an accurate curveball as well, he had hitters guessing all day. Fallston's lone hit came with two outs in the third inning on a bunt single by catcher Tyler Martenson.

Starter Taylor Nelson was coasting along for the Cougars (12-3) through the first four innings, as each team had just one hit on a coldy and windy day.

The Mustangs (14-0) broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, the sun came out and the bats began to heat up.

Andrew Gilly led off the inning with a single up the middle. Nelson then walked Colt Hancock. Andrew Clow, who has been producing runs for the Mustangs all season, singled.

Markey stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs. With two strikes on him, he ripped a double into left field, clearing the bases. He was thrown out trying to take third.

"Taylor Nelson's a good pitcher, but hitting is contagious," Markey said. "Once we got that first hit, we couldn't be stopped."

The Mustangs got two more big hits after that from Brian Dipple and Justin Martin to help them score five runs in the inning.

"We were hitting the ball hard all day, but it just wasn't dropping" Mustangs coach Tony Blackburn said. "I told them to keep going at it, and eventually the hits started to fall."
