Jeff Tuzo made his first start of the season a good one, scattering six hits and going the distance to help No. 8 Calvert Hall edge No. 7 Archbishop Spalding, 2-1, in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game Friday.

Tuzo (3-0) struck out three and walked one in seven innings. The right-hander, who has made five relief appearances this season, settled down after a shaky start to hold visiting Spalding (15-6, 7-4) to two hits in the final four innings. A Spalding win would have tied the Cavaliers with Calvert Hall (15-7, 9-2) for first place in the conference.

"It was a lot different," Tuzo said. "I hadn't started since last year, and I'm used to taking my time in the bullpen to get prepared."

Spalding starter Ryan Wagner also went the distance, holding Calvert Hall to three hits and retiring the final 11 batters.

The Cardinals' Scott Merkel singled to lead off the bottom of the first and later scored on a Matt Bosse groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Alex Barclay tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the second, but Dustin Rothschild's infield single gave Calvert Hall a 2-1 lead in the bottom half. Alex Lenovitz scored for the Cardinals after reaching when he was hit by a pitch.

Spalding hurt itself with a couple of base-running gambles. David Boretti grounded into a force at second with runners at first and third and none out in the second. He beat the throw to first, but Tim Breiner tried to score from third, and first baseman Lenovitz threw him out at home.

In the third, Calvert Hall catcher Ryan Welling threw out Sean Miller at third when he tried to take an extra base on a wild pitch.

"The little things in tight ballgames are what cost you games," Spalding coach Steve Miller said.
