Butler earns 2 wins in Maryvale sweep

Right-hander Jessica Butler (14-1) picked up two wins, including a shutout, as the No. 14 Maryvale softball team swept visiting Chapelgate Christian Academy on Thursday, winning 9-1 in the opener and 10-0 in the nightcap.

Butler pitched 10 innings, struck out 22 and gave up one run, five hits and one walk. Suzanne Patinella went 4-for-7 with two homers to lead the Lions (12-1).

No. 1 Chesapeake-AA 6, North County 0: Megan Hyson pitched a one-hitter with two walks and 17 strikeouts for the host Cougars (10-1). The Knights' lone run came on an infield hit by Megan Callender. Hyson also had a three-run homer.

No. 2 Archbishop Spalding 3, Mercy 2: Jean Sonni singled to left to score Jessica Bates from second as the host Cavaliers (13-1) beat the Magic in an eight-inning, international tie-breaker.

Emily Weiman had 22 strikeouts in the win and the only extra-base hit, a triple in the third inning.

Baseball

No. 3 Atholton 4, Reservoir 1: Right-hander Jamie Williams (3-0) went seven innings, gave up one run on three hits and struck out eight for the visiting Raiders (10-1).

Jordan Thompson led Atholton, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Boys lacrosse

No. 15 John Carroll 9, Annapolis Area Christian School 3: Rickey Demicco had three goals to power the host Patriots (8-1) past the Eagles. John Carroll's defense limited AACS to one goal in the first half.

Girls lacrosse

No. 9 Fallston 14, Bel Air 7: Abby Wilson had a hat trick to lead the host Cougars (6-1) past the Bobcats. Fallston outscored Bel Air 9-3 in the second half.

No. 11 Liberty 18, Westminster 14: Amanda Legar scored five goals to power the visiting Lions (6-2) past the Owls. Liberty led by two at the half, then maintained possession and held Westminster down.
