The Baltimore Sun was named newspaper of the year and first in website excellence in the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association annual awards contest.

The Sun won 30 awards in the editorial contest, including first-place prizes in public service, education, editorial and column writing, and photography, the association announced Friday. Competing in the division for dailies with 75,000 or more circulation, The Sun also placed first for coverage of state government, sports, and arts and entertainment. In addition, it won 11 awards in the association's online media contest.

Of The Sun's 14 first-place editorial awards, six were declared "Best of Show," meaning the judges considered them superior to the first-place winners in all categories.

James Drew's "Ready Money" story about a lack of oversight into spending at a city nonprofit placed first in the public service category. The sports staff won for coverage of the 134th Preakness.
