Police identify victim in Sunday fatal crash in Sparks

Officials cite speeding as a cause

April 22, 2010|By Jessica Anderson, The Baltimore Sun

Baltimore County police identified the person killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday as Richard Joseph Freeburger Jr., 30, of the first block of Shelby's Path Road in Sparks.

Police said speed probably was a factor in the crash that occurred at about 4 a.m. in the 14700 block of York Road in the Sparks area.

Freeburger was driving a 2005 Volkswagen GLT south on York Road, just north of Ridgebrook Road, when he topped the crest of a hill and lost control of the car, said Louise Rogers-Feher, spokeswoman with county police.

His vehicle veered off the road, strikinSg a guard rail and a tree, she said, causing his car to flip 11/2 times. Rogers-Feher could not say how fast Freeburger's vehicle was traveling.

The speed limit in that area is between 35 mph and 45 mph, she said.
