Glimpsed at Germano's Trattoria Cabaret: Tracie Thoms

Tracie Thoms says her style varies from day to day. "My everyday style can swing from super-casual to rock and roll to kinda chic. I say 'kinda chic' because I hate being uncomfortable. ...," says the actor/singer and Baltimore native. The Baltimore School for the Arts graduate took time out from her role on the CBS crime drama "Cold Case" to perform with current BSFA students at a Germano's Trattoria Cabaret.

The look: Black cotton knit ruched Bird by Juicy Couture sheath dress. Black satin peep-toe Ferragamo platform pumps. Pewter and gold leaf-shaped earrings. Hammered brass ring.

Where it came from: Her stylist found both the dress and shoes. Her earrings and ring were birthday gifts.

Her everyday wear: "You have to have a few pairs of skinny or straight jeans. I have a few pairs of black Juicy. I have different lengths of jeggings. ... Jeans and a soft cotton T-shirt. And a leather jacket. That's my staple outfit. ... I do love my combat boots that I actually wore in 'Rent' the movie -- and I bought them. They say 'Joanne' -- my character in 'Rent' -- on the inside of the boot. ..."

Her fashion passions: "I have a lot of little leather jackets: motorcycle jackets, bomber jackets. Because a leather jacket can 'hip' up any outfit. ... I also love a great bag. I had a YSL bag that I literally carried until it just about fell apart. ... Right now I'm carrying a black studded Olivia Harris bag. ... I just love a big bag I can throw everything in."

She's a 'shoe junkie': " I have about four pairs of Ferragamos, all platforms. I have more Jimmy Choo than anything else. I have two pairs of Louboutins. ... They can be uncomfortable but high heels always make your legs look better. It's important to know what your best asset is. Mine are my legs, so the higher heel is better for me. ..."

Her fashion don't: "I think the biggest don't is the muffin top. ... Just buy a bigger pair of pants. It's OK. If you try to squeeze into a smaller size because of your ego, you'll look larger. But if you wear a bigger size, you look smaller. ..."

Fashion philosophy: "You can change your size, but you can't change your shape. ... Know your body type, and take your ego out of it. ... That guitar shape on a woman is beautiful. You just have to dress it. We have to try not to be seduced by images in magazines that tell us that women who are shaped like boys are beautiful. Curves are beautiful. All shapes and sizes of women are beautiful. It's a process we all have to go through to love our bodies and love our shape."

Must-haves: "... You have to go out for brunch with your girls, have a few mimosas, a Bloody Mary or two. And then go jeans shopping because it's not fun for anybody. ... You should get three pairs of jeans: a black pair, a dark blue pair and a nice casual lighter, distressed pair ... Another must-have is Spanx. I don't care if you're skinny. Skinny girls wear Spanx because they make you smooth. ... Get yourself a nice pair of Chucks, Adidas, maybe Pumas. A nice pair of tall boots. And a nice pair of platform heels. And you're covered."
