What they're saying about the Ravens

Media roundup

April 13, 2010|By Baltimore Sun staff

Here's a look at recent mock draft projections for the Ravens, who hold the 25th overall pick in this month's NFL draft:

• DraftCountdown.com has the Ravens selecting Georgia Tech wide receiver Demaryius Thomas with the 25th overall pick.

At first glance Baltimore appears to be four deep at wideout but looks can be deceiving. Boldin has a long history of injuries, Derrick Mason is now 36-years-old, Mark Clayton has regressed each of the last three years and nobody knows what to expect from Donte Stallworth. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more impressive physical specimen at the wide receiver position in this class than Georgia Tech's Demaryius Thomas, who checks in at 6-3Πand 224 pounds and reportedly runs in the high-4.3's.

• WalterFootball.com predicts the Ravens will select Penn State defensive lineman Jared Odrick.

To steal something from my 2011 NFL Mock Draft, Dwan Edwards is gone, while Justin Bannan signed with the Broncos. Suddenly, Baltimore's defensive line is a little thin. Jared Odrick is one of the top players available and would be a great fit in the Ravens' defense.

• Charles Davis of NFL.com projects the Ravens to take Texas safety Earl Thomas.

Ed Reed continues to be on top of his game, but while Thomas is prepping behind him, he can play in their nickel packages, and some corner, too. He is talented enough.

• Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com thinks the Ravens will choose Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham.

With just five picks, look for Baltimore to focus on finding players that can both contribute right away and fill glaring needs. Gresham is the top tight end talent in this draft. Add him into the mix with recently acquired wideouts Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth, and watch Joe Flacco's passing numbers reach new heights.

• Don Banks of SI.com also thinks the Ravens will pick Gresham.

... they still covet a play-making tight end who gives them more downfield than Todd Heap has been able to muster in recent years. Gresham is the best the draft has to offer on that front.

• DraftKing.com also projects the Ravens to take Gresham.

Todd Heap has suffered from multiple injuries in recent years, and a very talented tight end like Gresham could fill that role quite nicely.

• NFLDraftBlitz.com also has the Ravens selecting Gresham

Jermaine Gresham would have been a 1st-Round pick had he declared last year, but he suffered a serious injury and will only get a look from teamswith potential that simply want to supplement their talent

• CBSSports.com's Rob Rang predicts that the Ravens will choose Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant.

If he can get over Dez Bryant's questionable professionalism, [ Ozzie] Newsome might just discover another star. Some veteran scouts have compared Bryant to Randy Moss.
