MISL names Blast forward Ferdinand Rookie of the Year

Blast forward Max Ferdinand was voted Major Indoor Soccer League Rookie of the Year by coaches, general managers and members of the media. Ferdinand, 23, had 14 goals and five assists for 35 points in 18 games; he was ninth in the MISL in points and led the league with four game-winning goals. Ferdinand also made the All-Rookie team along with Blast forward Rod Dyachenko, whohad 19 points in 18 games this season; 17 of those points came in the last eight games of the regular season.

Baseball: The Washington Nationals optioned right-handed pitcher J.D. Martin to Triple-A Syracuse. The move leaves left-hander Scott Olsen and righty Garrett Mock in the running for the fifth rotation spot.

NBA: The Washington Wizards signed guard Cedric Jackson to a 10-day contract. Martin averaged 16.4 points and 7.4 assists in 34 games for the Erie Bayhawks of the D-League.

NHL: Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson, the team's first-round pick in the 2008 entry draft (27th overall), was named to the American Hockey League All-Rookie team.
