Terps' Hayes to compete in college 3-point contest

Maryland guard Eric Hayes will participate in the 3-point shooting college championship April 1 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. The senior from Woodbridge, Va., who averaged 11.3 points for the Atlantic Coast Conference co-champion Terps, is one of four announced players in the contest. Hayes will be joined by Kansas' Sherron Collins, California's Jerome Randle and New Mexico's Roman Martinez. Other participants will be announced at a later date. The event, which will be televised on ESPN from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., also includes a slam-dunk contest and a women's 3-point shooting event. Hayes converted 64 of 141 3-point attempts as a senior, good for 45 percent. He finished his Maryland career with a 40 percent mark, fourth in Terps history.

Men's basketball: Bowie State senior forward Duke Crews was voted the Heritage Sports Radio Network Division II Player of the Year in a fan poll. Crews, a 6-foot-8 forward from Hampton, Va.,, scored 16.8 points per game and added 10.3 rebounds per game; he was the only player in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association to average a double double. He also averaged 2.5 blocked shots, second in the conference. Crews garnered 477 votes; Clark Atlanta's Najee Lane finished second with 166.

Women's lacrosse: Maryland freshman midfielder Katie Schwarzmann (Century) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week. Schwarzmann recorded a total of five goals and one assist in two wins over ranked opponents last week as the No. 2 Terps improved to 10-0 this season. She scored two goals and added an assist, a caused turnover and a draw control in Maryland's 20-8 home rout of No. 12 Stanford on Thursday, then scored the game-winner among her three goals in the Terps' 8-7 road victory over No. 11 James Madison on Saturday. Schwarzmann also had a caused turnover, a ground ball and a draw control against the Dukes. She was also named Rookie of the Week by WomensLax.com. ... Danielle Spencer and Shannon Smith each scored four goals as No. 1 Northwestern (8-0) won its 37th straight - a program record - over visiting No. 13 Notre Dame (5-3). Gina Scioscia had two goals for the Fighting Irish. ... Lauren Terry had five goals as visiting College of Notre Dame (2-5, 1-2 Colonial States Athletic Conference) fell, 20-6, to Gwynedd-Mercy (4-4, 3-0). Morgan Hosler and Kerri Boon each had four goals for the Griffins. ... Nora Fallon-Oben had four goals and two assists to power host St. Mary's (3-7, 1-2 Capital Athletic Conference) to a 22-4 win over Hood (2-8, 0-6). Lauren Perzan scored her ninth goal of the season for the Blazers.

Men's lacrosse: Salisbury sophomore midfielder Sam Bradman was named the Nike Player of the Week by InsideLacrosse.com after recording four goals, including the game-winner in overtime, and one assist to lead the Sea Gulls to an 11-10 win over previously unbeaten Gettysburg. He was also named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro/South Region Co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Robert Sinicola of Montclair State. ... No. 6 Duke scored three of the final four goals to beat visiting No. 14 Brown, 11-10. Max Quinzani and Steve Schoeffel each had a hat trick for the Blue Devils (7-3). Thomas Muldoon had four goals for the Bears (3-3). ... Jay Card had five goals and Kevin Ford had a hat trick to lead host No. 10 Hofstra (5-2) to a 17-2 victory over Army (3-5). Rob McCallion had a goal and an assist for the Black Knights.
