What they're saying about the Ravens: mock draft edition

Media roundup

March 31, 2010|By Baltimore Sun reporter

Here's a look at recent mock draft projections for the Ravens, who hold the 25th overall pick in next month's NFL draft:

• DraftCountdown.com has the Ravens selecting Penn State defensive end Jared Odrick with the 25th overall pick.

Odrick isn't flashy but he is a consistent, technically sound player who would fit in nicely opposite Haloti Ngata.

• WalterFootball.com also thinks the Ravens will pick Odrick.

To steal something from my 2011 NFL Mock Draft, Dwan Edwards is gone, while Justin Bannan signed with the Broncos. Suddenly, Baltimore's defensive line is a little thin. Jared Odrick is one of the top players available and would be a great fit in the Ravens' defense.

• Pat Kirwin of NFL.com projects that the Ravens to take Florida defensive end Carlos Dunlap.

Although he's labeled as immature by some, the Ravens lost starting defensive ends Dwan Edwards and Justin Bannan in free agency, Trevor Pryce is long in the tooth and this 6-foot-6, 277-pound guy that ran 4.61 at his pro day fits a need.

• Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com also thinks the Ravens will take Dunlap.

Dunlap's stock has taken a hit because of character questions stemming from a DUI arrest days prior to the 2009 SEC championship game. If he slips to 25, look for GM Ozzie Newsome to scoop him up.

• Don Banks of SI.com thinks the Ravens will pick Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham .

Gresham's draft grade may be too high to ignore. And we know, Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome always stays true to his board.

• CBSSports.com's Rob Rang also predicts that the Ravens will choose Gresham.

By adding Anquan Boldin, the Ravens gave Joe Flacco a legitimate No. 1 target and Ozzie Newsome showed he is committed to giving aging stars Ray Lewis and Ed Reed one more shot at the Super Bowl. Todd Heap, when healthy, has proven to be one of the better tight ends in the NFL but has struggled with durability in recent years.

• R.J. White of NFL Fanhouse also has the Ravens selecting Gresham.

The last piece to the offensive puzzle is a young tight end that can take over for the oft-injured Todd Heap. Gresham, despite a disappointing combine, is still the best of the best at the position and is a superb addition to the passing game.

• DraftKing.com projects the Ravens to take Gresham.

Todd Heap has suffered from multiple injuries in recent years, and a very talented tight end like Gresham could fill that role quite nicely.

• NFLDraftBlitz.com has the Ravens selecting Arizona tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Gronkowski is a calculated risk, to say the least, but the Ravens have addressed enough needs that they could take a chance.
