A suspected intruder was shot and killed in a Perry Hall home Sunday morning after he was confronted by a resident with a gun, police said.

According to Baltimore County Police, officers responded to the shooting at 5:46 a.m. in the 4200 block of Chapel Road.

Police officers said the suspected intruder, a 29-year-old male, had entered the home brandishing a firearm and was confronted by a male resident, who also had a gun and shot the intruder in the chest.

Police Lt. Robert McCullough said the intruder was taken to Franklin Square Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He said no one else was injured. Police would not disclose the identity of either man, saying they are still investigating.

The property, which has a two-story home, barn and garage, is also the address for a business called B&B Towing. A woman who answered the business telephone said the property is a home office. She declined to give her name.

Nora Dietz, who lives with her husband Carroll behind the property where the shooting occurred, said she was relieved to hear that a suspected intruder had been shot and killed. She said her 39-year-old daughter lives next to her and the B&B Towing property, and was the victim of an attempted burglary two years ago.

"I'm not for someone being shot, but you have to protect yourself," Dietz said.

Patricia Smith lives two doors down from the house where the shooting occurred, but learned about the incident from her daughter, who saw it on the news.

"It's a quiet neighborhood," said Smith, who has lived there for 10 years.

McCullough said he is not aware of any statistical evidence to indicate that there has been a recent increase in burglaries or other criminal activity in the area.
