Conti to announce Arundel county executive candidacy

March 16, 2010

An Annapolis Democrat plans to announce next Tuesday her candidacy for Anne Arundel County executive, her campaign said Monday.

Joanna L. Conti, a business executive, will challenge current County Executive John R. Leopold, a Republican who is seeking re-election. A Leopold spokesman declined to comment.

Conti, a newcomer to Maryland politics, announced last October the formation of an exploratory committee, and since then she has "been very active reaching out to constituencies and raising money," said her spokeswoman Rhonda Ellis.

Leopold, who served in the House of Delegates for two decades before he was elected county executive in 2006, has $546,448 on hand, according to campaign finance records. Conti has $43,072.

Conti, who last year formed the citizens advocacy group Maryland Great Inc., moved from Colorado in 2006. She has never held public office but ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2004 for the seat held by U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo.
