No. 11 Dunbar hit six straight free throws late in the fourth quarter to secure a 48-43 victory over visiting Surrattsville in the Class 1A South regional championship Saturday, earning the Poets a trip to the University of Maryland's Comcast Center for a state semifinal game at 3 p.m. Friday.
Senior Derrell Edwards scored nine of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter for the Poets, maintaining his reputation of being their go-to guy down the stretch.
"This whole season, my brother told me it's not about how you start, but how you finish," Edwards said. "The reason for my nine points in the fourth was because I knew I had to take over for my team."
Senior point guard Corey Spence also came up big for Dunbar late, scoring all six of his points in the last quarter, including four critical free throws in the final minute.
"I got off to a slow start," Spence said, "but I knew that I had to do what I could to run the offense. I was able to get to the free-throw line at the end, and I knocked them down."
The Hornets fought hard and used a late 9-2 run to tie the score at 41 with 2:10 left, but they could never find a way to take the lead in the second half. The Prince George's County team struggled to get rebounds and loose balls late against the more aggressive Poets.
"This game came down to our poise and mental toughness," Dunbar coach Cyrus Jones said.
No. 10 Old Mill 76, Great Mills 54: Joe McCargo had a game-high 18 points to lead the host Patriots (20-3) past the Hornets (18-5) of Prince George's County in the Class 4A East regional final.
Old Mill led 14-8 after the first quarter and never trailed. The Patriots will face Urbana, a 64-62 winner over Woodlawn, in a 4A state semifinal game Thursday at 9 p.m. at Comcast Center.
Granite Baptist 71, Temple Baptist (Va.) 50: Scott Scheerer had a game-high 30 points to power the Braves (18-7) past the Conquerors in the championship of the Mid-Eastern Christian Schools tournament.
