Thursday night's boys basketball playoff showdown between No. 5 City and No. 8 Lake Clifton - with a berth in the Class 2A North title game on the line - had a number of qualified candidates to step up and get it done for their respective teams.

City's Nick Faust proved up to the task.

The senior guard finished with 24 points - hitting four 3-pointers in the first three quarters, then making decisive plays in the pivotal fourth - leading the defending state champion Knights to a 60-47 win at packed Coppin State.

City (20-2) will host No. 3 Edmondson - a 66-62 winner over No. 9 Digital Harbor in Thursday's other semifinal - Saturday at a time to be announced.

Holding on to a 41-40 lead with 7:12 to play, the Knights went on an 8-0 run to get breathing room - Faust hitting his fifth 3-pointer to start the run and then ending it with a 3-point play underneath - and sophomore Charles Tapper's strong rebounding and key free throws in the final minutes closed the game out.

"We wanted to come out and play hard tonight. All we talked about was working hard in practice and playing well as a team, and that's what we focused on. That's all we've been doing, and we were ready for this moment," Faust said.

Lakers standout senior guard Josh Selby was limited to 18 points.

The Lakers, who captured the Class 3A state title last year, ended their season with a 15-6 mark.

No. 3 Edmondson 66, No. 9 Digital Harbor 62: The Baltimore City champion Red Storm overcame an inspiring 28-point performance from Rams senior Justin Jackson, relying on a balanced offense and pestering defense to advance to the regional title game.

Senior Jerry Lovelocke led four players in double figures with 17 points as the Red Storm improved to 19-2 this season.

Edmondson appeared to have the game in hand with a 63-53 lead before Jackson, whose father, George Sr., died this week, hit three straight 3-pointers in the final minute to cut the lead to 65-62 with 20 seconds to play. Jackson had two more 3-point tries in the final seconds - the last, with one second left, hit off the back of the rim.

Stanton Kidd finished with 15 points, Rodney Pratcher had 11 and a number of key assists, and Dwayne Smith added 10 points for the Red Storm.

The Rams, who won the Class 1A state crown last year, finished the season with an 18-5 mark.
