She was snatched from a motel Sunday and taken to an abandoned East Baltimore rowhouse strewn with toys and garbage, where she was duct-taped and tortured. They shot her in the face, stabbed her and tossed her in a dark, dank basement flooded with a foot of water.

But police say Deyonna N. Charles, 19, managed to escape. A passer-by saw her in the street and took her to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Charles survived.

According to court records and law enforcement sources, the ordeal stemmed from a drug dispute. Police have arrested four people, including two women.

Charles was at the Executive Inn in the 3600 block of Pulaski Highway when she left her room to get a soda, according to charging documents. A man with a handgun ordered her into a waiting vehicle.

Her captors drove her to the 1500 block of N. Patterson Park Ave. and duct-taped her head, hands and feet. She was assaulted with an unknown weapon and stabbed in the torso, hip and thigh. They placed tape across her eyes and shot her in the left side of her neck and right cheek.

"They were taking turns torturing me," she told police.

On Thursday, the door to the home was ajar. Fliers littered the vestibule, and in the main room, a carpet was stained with blood. A Power Rangers action figure, soda cans, a bowling ball and children's book bags were among the items scattered about. In the kitchen, dried blood dotted the tile floor near a refrigerator hanging open. A cat scurried by.

Court documents say Charles was ordered to make phone calls to round up ransom money, but law enforcement sources say her abductors didn't get what they wanted. Charles was taken to the flooded basement and left there.

Though still partly bound, she was able to flee the dwelling, and a passer-by drove her to Hopkins, police say.

Police arrested Torrence Jerome White, 23, of the 2400 block of E. Oliver St. He was charged Thursday with 19 counts, including attempted first-degree murder, and was ordered held without bond. Police say White stabbed Charles and told others to bind her with tape. He is also accused of ordering her to make calls to obtain ransom money.

Also arrested and charged with attempted murder and other counts were Adesha Richardson, 27, of the 2800 block of E. Biddle St.; Keonay Hill, 20, of the 900 block of Bennett Place; and Morris James, 22.
