Smith's right about public pensions

March 03, 2010

I agree with Ron Smith in his column from Feb. 26 ("Showdown over public employee benefits looming"). More and more people are becoming aware that certain groups of employees are receiving medical benefits and pension benefits that are far richer than what the majority of Americans get. I am referring to federal employees, state and local government workers and teachers. Over the past 20 years, the private sector has realized that it cannot afford to continue the generous benefit plans many Americans enjoyed in the past, and it is time for these other entities to make the change. It is unfair for taxpayers to be asked to shoulder the burden of these benefit costs.
