Reimer gives excuses for terrorism

February 22, 2010

Ahhh, me, another inane, ranting commentary by Susan Reimer ("Where a terrorist and '60s child converge," Feb. 22). This time comparing the Christmas Day bomber to a child of the 60's. She actually admits that she can "almost understand" what fuels so many jihadists! Somehow it's related to the choice of cereal in the grocery store. I'm sorry, I just can't seem to connect the dots.

First of all, Ms. Reimer refers to the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab as a "pious young man" confused and disappointed by the actions of others around him. She blames Victoria's Secret models, female network evening news anchors (just female?), "People" magazine, Martha Stewart, "hippie chick" snowboarders and on and on to the point of nausea for this "pious young" man's decision to try and blow up a plane full of human beings on Christmas Day. By the way...why just female models, news anchors and snowboarders??

Obviously the list is a litany of Ms. Reimer's complaints with pop culture/society rather than those of Mr. Abdulmutallab. Did I miss the article where Ms. Reimer sat down with Mr. Abdulmutallab and discussed his concerns about society with him?

Ms. Reimer asks us (the readers) what we would add to the list of woes that may have ignited Mr. Abdulmutallab's anger with American society and prompt him to commit such an atrocious act. You want a real sign of ridiculous American behavior? How about a gardening columnist who usually tell us how to grow tomatoes and plant pansies giving him excuses for his excretory actions???
