Vote to confirm Swaim-Staley for transportation is delayed

February 20, 2010

The Maryland Senate has delayed a vote to confirm Beverley K. Swaim-Staley as head of the state's transportation department. Sen. Anthony Muse, D-Prince George's, asked Friday to separate her name from other officials up for confirmation. Swaim-Staley has been serving as transportation secretary in an acting capacity since Gov. Martin O'Malley appointed her in September. Muse said he does not have "personal concerns" about Swaim-Staley, but he wants to know the department is being run efficiently with "fairness to all its workers." He declined to elaborate about what "fairness" issues worry him. Swaim-Staley said in a statement that she has maintaned an excellent relationship with the legislature for more than 25 years, and she looked forward to working with "all members on any issues of concern."
