A former counselor at a treatment facility for juvenile sex offenders pleaded guilty Wednesday to having sex with a 17-year-old boy who was a resident there.

Tyra M. Greenfield, 26, was sentenced to three years, with all but one year suspended, a term she will serve in the Baltimore County Detention Center. Circuit Judge Kathleen Cox stipulated that when she is released, Greenfield is to be on probation for three years.

Greenfield, who was charged with sexual abuse of a minor and harboring a fleeing felon after her arrest in September, was employed at the time by the New Directions Program, based at the Charles H. Hickey Jr. School in Cub Hill, the only secure treatment facility in Maryland for juvenile sex offenders. Under a deal with prosecutors, she pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in sexual conduct with a confined child.

On Sept. 28, Greenfield and two other counselors took a group of the program's clients on an outing to a movie theater at White Marsh Mall. One of the boys fled from the group and ran toward Interstate 95, police said.

It later emerged that Greenfield picked him up in Perry Hall and drove him to her apartment on Surrey Lane in Nottingham. He spent the night with her and they had sex, police said.

The next day, the boy used Greenfield's cell phone to call a relative in Laurel, Del., and she drove him there and dropped him off, police said. Detectives discovered Greenfield's involvement by tracing the call to her phone.

The youth, a sex offender, was picked up at the relative's house in Laurel by local law enforcement officers at the request of the Maryland State Police. He was charged with escape.

Greenfield, who returned home after driving to Delaware, was arrested there. She was subsequently fired from her job.
