Boccaccio Restaurant sold to mystery buyer

February 18, 2010

More than a year after the death of its former owner, Boccaccio Restaurant in Little Italy was sold at auction for $1.45 million Wednesday to a mystery buyer, and onlookers speculated that the winning bidder was a representative for Orioles owner and Baltimore attorney Peter G. Angelos. A.J. Billig & Co. Auctioneers handled the sale of the 9,000-square-foot property at 923-937 Eastern Ave. and 506-508 S. Exeter St. for the heirs of ex-owner Giovanni Rigato, who opened the restaurant in 1992 and died in 2008. The sale drew about 50 people, including half a dozen registered bidders, and bidding started at $700,000. Auction company representative Dan Billig said only that the buyer was an agent for a to-be-formed limited liability company. Angelos could not be reached.
