Coppin State's 2-game run ended by Winston-Salem St.

Shelton Carter scored a game-high 18 points off the bench and Winston-Salem State ended Coppin State's two-game winning streak with a 70-60 nonconference men's basketball victory over the host Eagles on Monday night. Carter was 6-for-10 from the field and 4-of-7 from the 3-point line to lead the Rams to a season sweep of the series against Coppin State. He added seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. Paul Davis added 12 points and nine rebounds for Winston-Salem State. Andrew Jackson scored 12 points, and Marcus Wells added 11. Winston-Salem State (9-14) shot 60.9 percent from the field in the first half on its way to a 43-31 lead at the intermission. Coppin State (7-16) shot just 31.5 percent from the field for the game and saw its two-game winning streak end. The Eagles were led by Quinston Reggins who scored 15 points, and Michael Harper had 11 points. Branden Doughty added five points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for Coppin State.

More games: Josh Bright had 12 points to lead host UMES past Bethune-Cookman, 62-56. The host Hawks (8-18, 6-6 MEAC) outscored the Wildcats (14-12, 6-6) by 37-29 in the first half. ... Chris McGrew had 18 points in a losing effort as visiting Salisbury fell to Marymount, 64-59. The Sea Gulls (12-10) need to win the next two Capital Athletic Conference games to clinch a playoff spot. ... Swarthmore (6-17, 5-11) held visiting Johns Hopkins (11-12, 7-9) to one basket in the final two minutes and went 8-of-10 from the free-throw line to win, 55-51.

Honors: Navy senior guard Chris Harris was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the third time this year after averaging 32.5 points in helping the Midshipmen split at Lehigh and Lafayette. .... Washington College sophomore guard-forward Kevin Breslin was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week after averaging 21.3 points in three games, two of them victories. ... Bowie State sophomore center Travis Hyman (Old Mill) was named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Newcomer of the Week after averaging 12 points, 6.0 blocks and 7.5 rebounds in two games.
