The McDonogh girls swimming team needed to battle to keep their championship streak alive in Sunday's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland title meet at UMBC. St. Paul's, however, didn't have to work nearly as hard to win its first crown.

McDonogh won its eighth consecutive A Conference team title, edging Notre Dame Prep by five points. The St. Paul's girls won seven of the 11 events and rolled to the school's first team championship in the B Conference competition.

The A Conference battle went down to the final event, but McDonogh (425) hung on to edge Notre Dame Prep (420).

"We knew we had a chance, but Notre Dame Prep is such a phenomenal team," McDonogh coach Scott Ward said. "Every single girl [13] scored for us. It was a great effort by all."

Senior Rachael Schaffer had a hand in all four of McDonogh's victories, winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.82) for the fourth straight year. The South Carolina-bound senior also took the 100 breaststroke (1:04.42) and helped on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:53.00) and the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:40.15). Her individual wins were both meet records. Rachel Peltz also swam on both winning relays.

Jordan Paavola swam in all three Blazers victories, winning the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle and helping in the 400 freestyle relay (3:38.98).

In the B Conference, St. Paul's finished with 427 to easily beat out John Carroll (337). Jordan and Kendall Surhoff each won twice. The Gators also won 200 medley relay (1:54.77), the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.43) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.00).

"We figured if everyone did as well as they were supposed to do [based on seeding], then we'd be fine," said Caroline Mitton of St. Paul's, coached by Polly Surhoff.

Jordan Surhoff won the 100 freestyle (55.14) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.44). Kendall Surhoff took the 200 IM (2:08.28) and the 500 freestyle (5:03.37). The Surhoff sisters also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

In addition, Mitton, Melissa Dorsch, Lauren Kasoff and Caroline Edgar each swam on two winning relay teams.
