McFadden leads Terps to women's lacrosse win

Caitlyn McFadden (Notre Dame Prep) had three goals and four assists to power No. 2 Maryland past visiting Richmond, 17-7, in the season opener for both women's lacrosse teams. Karri Ellen Johnson (Broadneck), Brandi Jones and Kate Faas also had hat tricks for the Terps, who outshot the Spiders 17-8 in the second half and moved to 17-0 all time against them.

More women's college lacrosse: No. 15 Penn State (1-0) rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit at home for a 9-8 win against No. 14 Loyola (0-1). The Greyhounds got a hat trick from Grace Gavin (St. Paul's) and two goals from freshman Cass Cursaro.

Men's college lacrosse: Jake DeLillo had five goals and visiting Salisbury won its 21st consecutive season opener, 19-6, over Greensboro. The Sea Gulls broke open a 1-1 tie by outscoring the Pride (0-1) by 5-2 in the second quarter.

Pro basketball: David Cortes scored 28 points and Elias Ayuso 21 to lead the Puerto Rico Capitanes to a 111-93 Premier Basketball League victory over the Maryland GreenHawks on Saturday night at Wootton in Rockville. Former Terp Byron Mouton scored 15 for the GreenHawks.

Capitals: Washington assigned defensemen Karl Alzner and John Carlson and goaltender Michael Neuvirth to Hershey of the American Hockey League.
