Winter storm results in postponements aplenty

February 11, 2010|By Sports Digest

The record-breaking snowstorms in Maryland have forced several local teams to postpone games originally scheduled for this week.

The Maryland men's basketball team's game against Virginia at Comcast Center was scheduled for Wednesday night. Instead, the Terps and Cavaliers will tip off Monday at 8 p.m. in College Park. The game will be broadcast online by ESPN360.

The Towson men's basketball team's game against UNC-Wilmington was also scheduled for Wednesday night. The Tigers will now face the Seahawks, a Colonial Athletic Association foe, at 1 p.m. today at the Towson Center.

Loyola had scheduled a doubleheader with the men's and women's basketball teams at Reitz Arena on Friday. The school will now host the two games Wednesday, with the women's team facing Iona at 4:30 p.m. and the men taking on Saint Peter's at 7. The school will also announce its new assistant vice president and director of athletics Wednesday during a 10:30 a.m. ceremony at the Ridley Intercollegiate Athletic Complex.

Loyola was also designated as the host school for this weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's and women's swimming and diving championships. Those events have been postponed until Feb. 18-20 at the Mangione Fitness and Aquatic Center.

Bob Wade, the coordinator of athletics for Baltimore City schools, announced the following changes to the athletics schedule for the District 9 championships.

• Wrestling championships: Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. at Carver.

• Varsity basketball championships: Feb. 23 at Morgan State, girls at 5 p.m. and boys at 7 p.m.

• Junior varsity basketball championships: Feb. 24 at Lake Clifton, girls at 4:40 p.m. and boys at 6:30 p.m.

• Swimming championships: to be rescheduled next week after two postponements.

The Blast has postponed Friday night's home game against the Philadelphia KiXX, rescheduling the contest for March 13 at 1st Mariner Arena. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m. The bobblehead promotion that was set for Friday's game - featuring Machel Millwood and Mike Lookingland - also is rescheduled for March 13.

Live racing at Laurel Park has also been canceled this week because of the snow. Wintry weather has forced the Maryland Jockey Club to cancel four straight live racing cards.

The $150,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap (Grade II) and the $75,000 John B. Campbell Handicap have been moved from Saturday to Monday. Other highlights of the event are the $150,000 General George Handicap (Grade II) and the $75,000 Marshua Stakes.

Finally, the Babe Ruth Museum has postponed "Babe's Birthday Bash" until Feb. 19. The event celebrates the 115th anniversary of Ruth's birth in Baltimore.

"It's unfortunate to have to now push the event back for a second consecutive week, but considering the snow that is blanketing our area, it is the right decision," Mike Gibbons, the museum's executive director, said in a news release.
