Prospect of snow prompts postponements

Events in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties pushed back

Because of the threat of ice and snow Tuesday evening, athletics events in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties were postponed along with all other evening events at schools in those systems.

Greg LeGrand, coordinator of athletics for the Anne Arundel County public schools, said that even though the snow was forecast for later in the evening, especially with the potential for ice, it was better to err on the side of safety.

"All the projections ... say that we're going to get some kind of freezing rain sometime during the time that we would have our games," LeGrand said. "People say, 'Well it's not until after 6 o'clock' and it gets confusing, but we canceled everything. Nantucket Elementary School had a winter festival concert. All of those things are canceled. We're hearing between one and three inches or two to four inches [of snow], but the first layer of it is supposed to be freezing rain."

In Anne Arundel County, the postponed girls and boys basketball games were moved to Wednesday. That included the showdown between the two teams unbeaten in the girls league: No. 6 Meade (15-0) and No. 5 Arundel (13-2), which will tip off at 6:45 p.m.

The swim meet involving Meade, Southern, North County and Glen Burnie has been moved to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Annapolis Swim Club with a second meet involving Old Mill, Annapolis, Chesapeake and Northeast to follow at 6.

The Anne Arundel County swimming championships are scheduled for Friday, when more snow is a possibility, so if that meet must be postponed, it will be moved to Feb. 12 at the Annapolis Swim Club, said LeGrand.

In Carroll County, the boys and girls basketball games between North Carroll and South Carroll have been moved to Wednesday. Both games are at 7 p.m. with the girls playing at North Carroll and the boys at South Carroll. The North Carroll at Liberty wrestling meet will be Saturday at 9 a.m.
