Police shoot man near hospital

An unidentified man was shot by a city police officer about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, a few hundred feet away from Union Memorial Hospital, according to a police department spokesman.

Police say the man attempted to attack the officer with a knife. The man's condition is unknown, according to spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

The shooting, the first-police involved of the year, happened in the 200 block of E. University Parkway, police said. Police have blocked off the area at Calvert Street and University Parkway.
