Employees' furlough day doesn't halt all city services

Parking meters must be fed today as many Baltimore City employees observe a furlough day. City offices will be closed except for police and fire emergencies. Trash and recycling will be collected today, but citizen drop-off centers, including the Quarantine Road Landfill, the Northwest Transfer Station and the Eastern, Western and Northwestern sanitation yards, will be closed. No bulk trash collection is scheduled. City buildings, with the exception of courts and schools, will not be open, a city spokesman said. The Charm City Circulator bus will operate on its regular schedule from 6:30 a.m. until midnight today. On Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Circulator will be run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Parking meters must be fed Monday as well. The Department of Transportation's Fallsway vehicle yard will be open today from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. All unclaimed vehicles will be moved to Pulaski Highway and can be claimed from there on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. On Monday, both the Fallsway and Pulaski locations are closed.

Police identify man fatally hit by truck in Middle River

Baltimore County police identified a Middle River man killed Wednesday night after he stepped into the path of a large pickup truck while attempting to cross Pulaski Highway near Middle River Road. James Rayman, 40, of the 9600 block of Pulaski Highway ran across the eastbound lanes in the 9500 block of Pulaski Highway near the Colonial Motel just east of Middle River, then climbed over a nearly 4-foot-tall concrete barrier separating the eastbound and westbound lanes. Police said Rayman then entered the fast lane and was struck by a late-model Ford F-350 pickup truck. They said he suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck, whose name was not released, remained at the scene and was not injured. Rayman was taken to the state medical examiner's office. The county police crash team is investigating the accident.

Parkville High group wins holiday decoration award

The holiday themes have been erased from shop windows along Harford Road in Parkville, but area students and community groups are reaping the rewards of their work and creativity. The Parkville Carney Business and Professional Association has awarded the $250 best overall prize for its window decoration contest to Parkville High School, whose art honor society turned the Hohne Pool windows into a winter scene filled with playful penguins. Loch Raven High School came in second and won $200 for its interpretation of a Christmas tree trimmed with billiard balls at a sporting goods store. Other winners include Parkville Middle School, Parkville Dance Power and Victory Villa Tots, who each won $150 for their efforts on glass canvases throughout the business district.
