Navy men top Coppin, 78-75, end 4-game losing streak

Jordan Sugars hit his seventh 3-pointer of the game with one second left to lift the host Navy men's basketball team over Coppin State, 78-75, Wednesday.

The win ended a four-game losing streak for the Midshipmen (5-8).

A free throw by Chris Harris with 3:24 left in the game tied the score at 69-69. Sugars hit a 3-pointer for a 72-69 lead with 2:02 left, but Coppin State battled back to tie the score two more times, the last on a 3-pointer by Kareem Brown with seven seconds left.

Sugars finished with a game-high 27 points and Harris had 20. Brown led the Eagles (5-6) with 23 points.

Morgan State 87, Long Island U. 70: Reggie Holmes scored 23 points as Morgan overcame an eight-point first-half deficit.

Kevin Thompson had his 10th double double of the season for the Bears (8-5) with 13 points and 17 rebounds while Troy Smith scored 16 points and DeWayne Jackson chipped in 15 in the consolation game of the Dr Pepper Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Bears opened the second half with an 8-2 run and LIU could get no closer than six the rest of the game.

Bowling Green 70, Towson 69: Josh Thornton (17 points) went three-for-three from the free-throw line with three seconds left, but the host Tigers (3-7) fell short. Towson rallied in the final six minutes, going on a 9-0 run.

Vermont 71, Mount St. Mary's 69: Jeremy Goode had 20 points in a losing effort for the host Mount (3-9). Joey Accaoui hit a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds left to break a 69-69 tie and help the Catamounts improve to 9-5. Vermont's Marqus Blakely had 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Central Connecticut 89, UMBC 86: Chris De La Rosa had a game-high 25 points and Robby Jackson had 24 in a losing effort in double overtime for the visiting Retrievers (1-11).

St. Mary's 70, Hampden-Sydney 69: Alex Franz (Cardinal Gibbons) hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to lift the Seahawks (10-2) over the host Tigers (5-5) in the title game of The Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops.

Women

Virginia Commonwealth 70, Coppin State 40: D'Andra Moss scored a game-high 23 points in a losing effort for the visiting Eagles (3-7).

Georgia State 76, UMES 49: Danyiell McKeller had a game-high 22 points and the host Panthers (9-2) won their tournament title game.

Casey Morton and April McBride and Casey Morton led the Hawks (2-5) with 12 points each.

Richmond 63, Morgan State 60: Brittani Shells (32 points) hit the game-winning 3-pointer with one second left, as the Spiders (9-4) beat the Bears (3-8).
