Next Sunday and Jan. 3 Guided walk through the forest to learn to identify trees without their leaves, 1 p.m., at the Patuxent Research Refuge North Tract, Laurel. All ages. BIRDING
Jan. 6 and 13 Bird walks with a naturalist at Patuxent Research Refuge, Laurel, 8 a.m. Field guides and binoculars are recommended. The visitors center is on Powder Mill Road, between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 197. To register: 301-497-5887.

Jan. 10 Search for birds in several habitats on this guided hike, 8:15 a.m.-10:15 a.m., at the Patuxent Research Refuge North Tract, Laurel. All ages. Field guides and binoculars recommended. FISHING
Jan. 11 Capt. Bob Walter of Light Tackle Charters will discuss fishing techniques at a meeting of the Pasadena Sportfishing Group, 7:30 p.m., Earleigh Heights Fire Hall, Ritchie Highway and Magothy Bridge Road, Severna Park. Jan. 17 Join a ranger-guided hike at Patapsco Valley State Park's Daniels area in Howard County. Two-hour hike begins at noon and will cover semi-rough terrain. Bring water and wear hiking shoes.
