Today's Laurel card canceled; racing will resume Jan. 1

The Maryland Jockey Club has canceled today's live racing schedule and simulcasting at Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course because of the winter storm warning issued for Maryland and its neighboring states from Friday evening until late tonight. With the cancellation, live racing at Laurel Park is over for the 2009 season. The 2010 session begins Jan. 1 with post time scheduled for 12:35 p.m. Laurel Park and Pimlico will be open for simulcasting Sunday through Wednesday and next Saturday to Dec. 31.

Maryland tackle Campbell plans to enter NFL draft

Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell has told the school he intends to come out early and enter the NFL draft. Campbell, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound junior, was limited this season by knee and turf toe injuries.

33 fewer deer killed in 2009's 2-week firearms season

After a strong opening weekend that surpassed last year's numbers by 20 percent, Maryland's two-week deer hunting season for firearms leveled off and ended 33 deer below the 2008 total. Hunters killed 43,664 white-tailed deer and 1,140 sika deer. The total in the two western-most counties was 4,809 deer, just eight fewer than last year. Hunters in the rest of the state killed 39,995 deer, a slight decrease from last year's total of 40,020. Junior deer hunters supervised by a licensed, unarmed adult, bagged 1,961 deer statewide, a 28 percent increase over last year's total.

Baseball: : A lawsuit by a business seeking $203,000 from former Oriole Sammy Sosa has been thrown out by a Dominican Republic prosecutor. Adolfo Feliz said Friday that the suit brought by Carim Abu Nabaa lacked sufficient evidence.
