Cincinnati went right back to Central Michigan for its next coach.

Butch Jones was hired on Wednesday to replace Brian Kelly, who came from Central Michigan three years ago and led the Bearcats to national prominence before leaving for Notre Dame last week.

CMU named assistant Steve Stripling as interim head coach.

•Louisiana-Monroe hired Todd Berry as its coach. Berry, a former head coach at Army, was the school's offensive coordinator in 2004-05 under Charlie Weatherbie, who was fired. ... San Jose State has hired Duke defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre as coach.... Former Kansas coach Mark Mangino will be paid $3 million as part of a settlement. Mangino resigned with four years left on his contract worth $9.2 million. ... South Florida has hired an outside person to assist in a probe of accusations that coach Jim Leavitt struck a player in the locker room.

•Southern Illinois had three players named to the Associated Press FCS All-America team. Senior RB Deji Karim and senior LB Brandin Jordan were first-teamers, while junior CB Korey Lindsey was selected to the third team. ... Wisconsin-Whitewater kicker Jeff Schebler won the Fred Mitchell Award, named for the Tribune columnist, that goes to a placekicker in Division II or III who demonstrates excellence on and off the field. ... Retired Tribune prep writer Alan Sutton will be inducted into the media wing of the Illinois High School Basketball Hall of Fame in April.

Matt Simms, son of former NFL star Phil Simms, will play at Tennessee. ... John Lomax III, accused of stabbing Connecticut football player Jasper Howard to death in October, pleaded not guilty.
